Is wine available in sulfite-free formats?

No. Sulfites are a naturally occurring by-product of fermentation. Any fermented product contains sulfites, including bread, soy sauce, and beer.

Additionally, some wine makers add very small amounts of additional sulfites--or sulfur dioxide--to prevent oxidation, kill bacteria and wild yeasts, and promote quick, clean fermentation. The amount of sulfite in wine is small. Still, the U.S. government requires wine labels to include Contains Sulfites to alert consumers who are allergic to the substance.
