It's difficult to keep up with what the FDA has called a "fast-moving outbreak" that has led to the recall of at least 240 products. We suggest that you be wary of any product in your home that contains nuts. Check the online lists to see if the company has issued a recall, or call the phone number on the package and ask customer service if the product has been recalled.

Several companies on the original lists we supplied links to have expanded their recalls in response to the expanded recall issued by Sunland.  Sunland's recall now includes all products made in the Sunland nut product production facility from March 1, 2010 to September 24, 2012. Sunland, Inc. has announced 101 recalls of its varieties of peanut butter, almond butter, cashew butter, tahini and blanched and roasted peanut products, some packaged under other brand names.  Trader Joe's announced its recall of Creamy Salted Valencia Peanut Butter, a product made by Sunland, which has caused a salmonella outbreak that led to 30 illnesses (mostly of children) in 19 states. Recalls related to the contamination in the Sunland plant have led to many more recalls of a wide variety of products sold in major supermarket chains. They carry many different brand names but all are produced by or contain ingredients made by Sunland, Inc. a New Mexico company.

Here are the types of products that these recalls have extended to:

  • nuts, peanuts, and peanut sauce
  • peanut butter (different varieties, such as crunchy and creamy)
  • other nut butter spreads
  • cookies containing nuts
  • brownies containing nuts
  • ice cream containing nuts
  • peanut butter crunch candy
  • sandwiches made with a nut butter, cinnamon, and apples
  • peanut butter ice cream

Although no illnesses have been associated with any products except Trader Joe's, to be cautious, check your pantry, fridge, and freezer for these nut-containing products. If you find any, check online to find out whether what's in your home has been recalled. According to the Mayo Clinic, most salmonella infections can be classified as gastroenteritis.  The incubation period for salmonella ranges from several hours to two days. Possible signs and symptoms include nausea, vomiting, abdominal pain, diarrhea, fever, chills, headache, muscle pains, and blood in the stool. This misery usually lasts 4-7 days, though it may take several months for the bowels to return to normal.

The FDA warns consumers not to eat recalled products. This is especially important for children under the age of 5 years, elderly adults, and people with weak immune systems. Consumers should dispose of the product or return the product to the store where they purchased it.
