The Latest Ice Cream Flavor—Made with Human Milk

ice creamWould you pay $23 (14 British pounds) for one serving of ice cream? That will be the price if you want the exotic experience of tasting breast milk ice cream.  But wait.  It could get even more expensive: you’ll have to go to London to buy it.

So you’re on your way? Here’s your exact destination:  you’re going to the Icecreamist (not Iscreamist) in Covent Garden to sample named the “Baby Gaga” (not gag-gag).  The recipe (just in case you’re a nursing mother and want to make some yourself) blends breast milk, vanilla pods, and  lemon zest and churns these ingredients into a yummy frozen treat.  It’s just one of a dozen new flavors created by Icecreamist’s founder, Matt O’Connor.  In defense of “Lady Gaga,” he says, “It’s pure, organic, free-range, and totally natural.”

But, many wonder, is it safe?  The company says the milk was screened in line with blood donor requirements and then pasteurized.  However, it has been pointed out that viruses—including hepatitis) can be transmitted via breast milk.  As a result, local government officials have  confiscated “Lady Gaga,”  and it is being tested, with the full cooperation of its creator.

Where did O’Connor get the breast milk?   From women who answered his ad on an online mothers’ forum.  One of the contributors explained that she did it to show other people how tasty breast milk is, in hopes of encouraging more new mothers to nurse.  But another motivation is financial since the milk is sold, not donated to the shop.

Breast milk ice cream was supposed to go on sale starting Friday, March 4. However, at this writing, its future is uncertain.

One person who tried it praised the taste and texture.  “It melts in you mouth,” she declared.
