Is it safe to eat soft cheese if I'm lactose intolerant?

Soft ripened cheeses such as brie or camembert may create less reaction than the equivalent amount of milk, depending on how they  are processed. However, today most commercial cheeses are manufactured by processes that don't have the same lactose-reducing properties as previous methods. There may be exceptions, but packaging generally doesn't indicate whether the process used to make the cheese significantly reduced lactose.
