How long can leftover cake sit out at room temperature?

Cakes containing whipped cream, fresh fruit, and other perishables should be refrigerated immediately after serving. Cakes with butter cream icings may sit out at room temperature for extended periods of time. However, the cake may grow stale more quickly than cake stored in the refrigerator, particularly if it isn't covered or wrapped in plastic or aluminum foil.
