How long after purchase will packaged, pre-cut lettuce remain good to eat?

Due to new packaging methods that extend shelf life, unopened packaged lettuce may be consumed up to the "use by" date. However, once the package is opened, the lettuce can degrade before the "use by" date if it isn't refrigerated in an air-tight plastic bag. This is because anti-oxidative gases that preserve packaged lettuce escape from the original packaging once it is opened.
