How can I avoid crying when I cut an onion?

First, let’s consider why cutting an onion can create tears.  When the onion is cut, a vapor is released, and, when this vapor comes in contact with the eye, it forms a type of sulfuric acid that causes the eyes to sting and water. Now, choose your solution from the options below:

- Cut the onion under water.

- Chill the onion in the fridge before cutting.

- Cut it in a well-ventilated place and as fast as possible.

- Use a very sharp knife. That will allow less of the tear-causing  compounds to come out.

- Put a slice of bread in your mouth  and let half of it stick out to catch the fumes.

- Burn a candle near your cutting area.  The troublesome gas is drawn toward the heat.

- Wear safety goggles or glasses.

- Forget all of the above, and buy pre-cut onions.
