Does the plastic bottle affect the taste or safety of bottled water?

Some lower grade plastics can give a plastic taste to water. Therefore, many bottlers have switched to a more expensive high-grade plastic that doesn’t affect the taste.

The safety of plastics used for packaging food products is regulated by the FDA and USDA. However, plastic approved for a particular use, such as bottling water, may not be acceptable for contact with alcoholic beverages because the alcohol can leach compounds from the plastic, compounds that cannot be leached by water. Foods or beverages high in alcohol, fat, sugar, or salt may behave differently from water. Therefore, don’t reuse an empty plastic water bottle to store other beverages.
