Are cakes and cake mixes available in allergen-free varieties?

Yes. Some commercial cake mixes no longer require eggs. Some store-bought cakes also may be egg- free. Be sure to check the label and cooking instructions.

Additionally, some store-bought cakes are gluten-free or flourless. However, many manufacturers can't guarantee that gluten-free cakes and flourless cakes are, in fact, 100-percent gluten- and flour-free. This may be because the cakes are manufactured in the same environments as cakes that contain gluten or flour. Cakes can pick up trace amounts of flour or gluten under such circumstances.

Therefore, those with severe flour or gluten allergies may want to avoid commercially-processed flourless or gluten-free cakes.

To be absolutely certain that a cake is allergen-free, bake it yourself.
