How should cakes and cake mixes be stored?

Cakes with butter-cream-based icings may be left at room temperature for several hours. If the cake is to be served the next day, wrap and refrigerate it overnight to keep it from drying.
Cakes with whipped cream icing or cakes containing fresh fruit fillings or fillings made of similar perishables should be refrigerated immediately. If the cake was refrigerated in the store, refrigerate it in the home environment.
Unopened cake mixes can be stored in the pantry.
