What storage tips could extend the life of lactose-free milk?

  • Shop for milk just before reaching the supermarket check-out, and transfer milk to a refrigerator or cooler as quickly as possible, especially in hot weather.
  • Storing milk at too high a temperature promotes bacterial growth and accelerates deterioration. Make sure your refrigerator temperature doesn’t exceed 40° F. McNeil’s Nutritionals’ spokesperson, Jennifer Minder, advises consumers to store LACTAID®  at 38° F.
  • Sunlight can affect milk, especially if it’s  in a clear container. Exposure to direct sunlight dilutes the milk’s riboflavin content and lessens its nutritional value.  Get milk back into the refrigerator as soon as possible.
  • Store milk on an interior refrigerator shelf rather than in the door, where the temperature fluctuates with frequent opening.
