What are some of the more common apple varieties?

Apples come in more than 2,000 varieties. These are among the more common ones:

  • Fuji is the most extensively planted apple variety worldwide  It is yellow-green with red highlights, outstanding juiciness, a crisp texture, and a complex sweet but tart flavor.
  • Red Delicious apples are very sweet and can turn mealy if they aren't stored in the refrigerator.  The Red Delicious is not a good cooking apple because it falls apart under sustained heat.
  • Golden Delicious apples are yellow to yellow-green  and have a lightly freckled appearance. They  are not as sweet as the Red Delicious and are a better cooking apple.
  • Jonathans are bright red and great for both eating raw and cooking. They are crisp and have a  pleasantly tart flavor.
  • McIntoshes are a tender and less tart variety. They often don't cook well but are fine for eating fresh.
  • Granny Smith apples are well known for their bright-green color. They are mainly tart, but carry a hint of sweetness. Their firm texture, good size, and unique flavor make them ideal for baking.
  • Staymans have a deep, purplish-red skin. They're firm, tart, and juicy, making them ideal for baking or eating fresh.
  • Winesaps are very similar to the Staymans.
  • Newton Pippin apples have green-to-yellow coloring and a wine-like flavor.
  • Imperials have a firm texture and wine-like flavor, making them ideal for baking.
  • Empires have a firm texture and slightly tart flavor. They are good, all-purpose apples.
