If my refrigerator breaks down, how long will my open jar of mayonnaise be good?

The USDA recommends discarding mayonnaise and salad dressings made with mayonnaise if the temperature in your refrigerator reaches 50°F and stays there for more than 8 hours.  To check the temperature, buy an appliance (refrigerator/freezer) thermometer. You can find one for about $6  at some supermarkets and most hardware stores.
