How should berries be washed and handled prior to serving them?

Wash your hands with hot soapy water before handling the berries. Also, wash and sanitize all preparation areas and utensils.

Washing berries in a sink filled with water isn't recommended because standing water can spread contamination from one berry to another. Instead, place the berries in a clean strainer and wash them thoroughly under running water. Because their surfaces are difficult to clean, use a kitchen sink sprayer to clean strawberries. The added pressure will enhance cleaning effort. After washing, pat berries dry with a clean paper towel.
