How can I be sure the winter squashes I select are fresh and wholesome?

Select winter squash that is firm, heavy for its size, and that has a hard, tough skin with no cuts, punctures, sunken spots, or mold. A tender rind indicates immaturity, which is undesirable in winter squash.

When selecting winter squash, avoid specimens with nicks and bruises. Also avoid soft or translucent specimens.
