Does trans-fat content affect how long margarine lasts?

Trans-fatty acids (partially hydrogenated vegetable oil) preserve margarine’s flavor, semi-solid shape, and overall shelf life, but due to the health risks of eating trans fats, many margarines now contain little or none.

So do these new margarines have the staying power of margarines with trans-fats? Manufacturers say yes. New processing methods, stabilizing oils, preservatives, emulsifiers, and gums maintain freshness.

Richardson Nutrition’s Canola Harvest zero-trans fat margarines have a 9-month shelf life.

Land O’ Lakes margarines all have the same shelf life regardless of trans- fat content, according to a company spokesperson.
