Can herbs and spices go bad?

Not really. Instead, they eventually lose their flavor and potency. In general, the larger and more whole the spice or herb is, the more slowly it loses flavor.

Open each container and check to see if the color looks faded. Perform the sniff test or taste a small amount. Does it still have plenty of aroma and taste? If not, replace it.

Never shake herbs or spices directly out of the container into something you’re cooking. That’s the quickest way to steam-- and therefore spoil--whatever is left in the container.
