What's the best way to remove a cherry pit?

A cherry pitter works best, but a drinking straw or paring knife also will do. To use a straw, press it through the center of the cherry's bottom. The straw will push the pit out, leaving behind a small tunnel through the center of the fruit.

If appearances aren't of concern, slice each cherry from base to stem with a paring knife, then twist the cherry apart and pull out the pit.
