Should I wash unpackaged spinach before storing or eating it?

Yes. Because spinach grows in sandy soil, grit clings to its leaves. Wash it as soon as you get it home.

Remove stems by twisting or cutting off the leaves just above stem line and immerse in a sink or container of cold water. Swish the leaves around, and then let them stand for a few minutes while dirt sinks to the bottom. Thoroughly dry the leaves by using a salad spinner or by blotting them with paper towels. Then wrap the leaves in dry paper towels and seal them in a plastic bag for storage. Wash the spinach again prior to serving.

Cutting boards, knives bowls and other items used to cut or wash spinach should be thoroughly washed with soap and warm water both before and after use. Also, wash your hands with soap and warm water.
