How should fresh winter squash be handled while preparing it?

Wash your hands for 20 seconds with warm water and soap before and after preparing winter squash. Likewise, wash cutting boards, utensils, and other implements before and after preparing the squash. Thoroughly wash the squash prior to slicing it. This will minimize the potential for transferring bacteria from the outer rind to inner fruit during slicing.
 
Winter squash may need to be halved for seed removal prior to additional slicing.
