How should fresh melons be handled prior to serving them?

Since it's possible for melon skins to harbor pathogens from soil or handling, wash the rinds thoroughly prior to slicing. Wash the melon rind thoroughly with cool tap water to remove surface dirt. If it still looks dirty, scrub the rind with a clean produce brush.

Before washing and slicing, be sure to thoroughly wash your hands with soap and water, particularly if you've just handled other fresh produce or raw meat product. Wash cutting boards, knives, and other utensils with soapy, hot water both before and after slicing melons.
